Chapter 47

Into the Lion’s Den

The office of Malcom Robbins, Esq. was on the upper floors of an office building overlooking Arlington Cemetery and the Iwo Jima Monument. The legal partnership enjoyed the confidence of the current administration, and their daily rates reflected an occasional “sole source” contract for services.

Malcom was the firm’s lead dealmaker, and his volunteer work with the President’s effort to reorganize the government brought the firm work from various parties anxious to support or avoid change.

“See, Clyde, we have a typical law office here. Much space is devoted to conference rooms and meeting areas. The practice of law in the modern era demands teamwork and long hours. I am sure out of sight all kinds of delight await the poor, overworked staff attorney.”

Like what?

“Like what, what?” I asked. Clyde’s thoughts are normally easy to understand, but occasionally he is difficult to understand. Since he operates inside my head, Clyde doesn’t pay proper attention to the implied subject of a sentence and antecedents for pronouns.

What delights await the overworked staff attorney?

“Oh, that? There can be all kinds, mostly far away from the law office, including companionship from the opposite sex and other temptations. For the truly virtuous, a sweet deal financial plan that pays off when you retire, and similar financial goodies are offered. All these await the completion of a successful case, of course,” I whispered.

The beautiful young lady at the reception desk looked at me strangely for a second time. She could see my lips move even though I kept my voice down.

I walked to the desk, flashed my ID, and asked to see Mr. Malcom Robbins.

“Oh, he left for the day. Something about a family matter. Did you have an appointment?” the nice lady asked.

“I didn’t. We are chums from boarding school, and I hoped to drop in and take him to lunch.”

“Really, how nice,” she said with a puzzled look. I felt that I had stepped into it and looked for a way to make a graceful exit. I caught on when she double-checked her watch.

“It is rather late for lunch, but Malky, we called him that in school, joked he liked to snack around tea time. He did spend time in England as a child. His father was attached to Her Royal Majesty’s Dragoons based in Windsor.”

Thank the stars you didn’t add as a horse’s ass, Clyde warned. Another pack of lies to your credit, David.

The young lady’s eyes glazed over. She handed me a small notepad and pen.

“I will give him a note if you care to leave one,” she offered.

I nodded, wrote a quick note, smiled at the nice lady, and we left.

What now?

“Now, I think we return to the home of Malcom’s father. I believe the father knows more of the Nightdreams Club than he admitted.”

Possibly, but how will you get more information from the father or the son. You have no leverage. Plus, the father is trained in the headhunter arts and told you the son is also. They will not be easy to fool.
